unknown feature (to us) - what is space with red bar?

Question,

What is space with red bar (see attachment) and more important how do we get rid of it :-)

At the very bottom right in your screenshot is the "Display" pull-down button. Just uncheck "Show Timeline Notes".

But you should learn to use it, it's very useful for planning your animation, especially the timing...
Quicktime is DEAD. Get over it and move on !
