problems with save/export folder

Post by Joost »

Since I start using tvpaint I have some issues with exporting and saving my files.

TVPaint always suggest the wrong folder where to save my files. When I use "save as" tvpaints suggests a folder, but it's never the right one, and if I use the "save as" function immediately again, it also suggests the wrong folder to save my file. I always accepted this as one of the flaws of tvpaint, but I asked around, and not every one else has this problem.

The same problem shows up when exporting files.

I think it will save me a lot of time if tvpaint suggests the right folder when exporting/saving. Is there anything I can do about it?

Sounds like an OS issue to me. Does the same happen in other programs?

OS, TVPaint version, etc...

Do you use the TVPaint file requester or the System file requester ?

I use tvpaint 10 pro (32bits), Imac osx 10.8.
And I use the mac file requester, and I don't want to change to the tvpaint file requester.

It doesn't happen in other programs, only in tvpaint.

Someone at my studio, who is also working in tvpaint 10 in os x 10.8, only sometimes has this problem when saving or exporting (using the mac file requester).

And when I want to export files he created, TVPaint still uses the export name he created the first time, even when I export and save the file multiple times.

Yes, by default (if you don't clikc on the Browse) it uses the last path used to export. It's especially useful for people who work on network and save their job on a server folder (and not on their computer directly).
Anyway, if you click on the browse, the System file requester will propose by default the folder where your TVPaint file is located.

Once I saved my project with the good path for the export (after a first export, of course), it keeps it like this.

What do you mean by "default folder".
Because, when I click "browse" I don't go to the folder where my tvpaint project is saved. I just go to my project folder.

Wouldn't it be more logical to go to the folder you see on the path when you click on the "browse" button?...

Same problem whe I choose "save as", I just go to my basic project folder, not to the last folder I saved my file in, so I have to find the right folder again and again...

I didn't mention any "default folder", I said "the System file requester will propose by default the folder where your TVPaint file is located."

Err... what's the difference ? I don't understand.
Joost wrote:Wouldn't it be more logical to go to the folder you see on the path when you click on the "browse" button?...
It does, but only when you use the TVPaint file requester. I don't remember why, but I remember the question was already asked in the past and the developers gave an answer.

What do you mean by "basic project folder" ? Do you mean an upstream folder in your path ?

When I use "save as", tvpaint shows my project folder, not the folder where I last saved my file. So I have to search for the right folder every time I want to save my file. The same happens when I use the "browse" button when I want to export a file. For me it's always a relief to work in a program like After Effects, because I'm always surprised that After affects gives me exactly the right folder to save or export.

So this is what it looks like when I use save as Tvpaint suggest:
Project folder (name of the project) > Then I have to search for the right folder> animation (folder) > scene number (folder)> shot number (folder).

It would be nice to go to the right shot number folder where I last saved my project...

Do you understand what I mean?

The same happens when using the "browse" button when exporting. Is it maybe possible in the future to go to the right folder when clicking on the browse button? It would be really handy...

When I use "save as", the folder proposed is the last one I've used to save a file.

In the export footage panel, the path is ALWAYS the last one you used.
If you didn't export yet, it will be the folder where the TVPaint file you are currently using IS placed.

Let's imagine :

Your TVPaint file is saved in :
Project folder (name of the project) > animation (folder) > scene number (folder)> shot number (folder).

When you will export it or resave it, it will propose you by default the same path.

--------------------

Now imagine you have exported your animation in :
Project folder (name of the project) > export (folder) > scene number (folder)> shot number (folder)
Then after, you saved your file and closed TVPaint.

The original file is still saved in animation (folder) > scene number (folder)> shot number (folder)
but the link to export is export (folder) > scene number (folder)> shot number (folder).

If later in the day, you re-open the tvpaint file to re-export the file, you will get in the export footage panel :
Project folder (name of the project) > export (folder) > scene number (folder)> shot number (folder)

Now imagine, you want to export this file in a different path, like :
Project folder (name of the project) > video (folder) > scene number (folder)> shot number (folder)

You click on "Browse" :
If you use the TVPaint file requester : it will propose you the last path used to export your file (just like you would like)
If you use the Mac file requester : it will propose you the last path used to save your file.

But anyway, in a case on in another, you'll still have to choose again the wished folder.

You can also change a path just by writing the good name. Sometimes, it's faster than searching.

----------

By the way, if you create then a new project, it will propose you to save it in the last path used (to save or export). Whatever if it's by the Mac ot TVPaint file requester.

1- why? this is really not handy
2- on my computer it doesn't go to the path I last saved my project. It goes to my default project folder when I use "browse".

And what about "save as"? This is my most important issue.

When I use "save as", why doesn't tvpaint show the path of the folder where I last saved it (even if I didn't close tvpaint) ?...
