3 point spline artefacts
3 point spline artefacts
I recently tried out the 3 point spline tool and used it to clean-up some drawing. It is a really handy tool and I wonder why I never used it before.
I noticed that if you use the airbrush and the 3 point spline tool some strange artifacts appear next to the curve: I think they only appear if the brush size is set to "pressure" so if you set it to "none" everything is fine.
Every other tool (pencil, oil brush...) seems to work fine, even if the size is set to "pressure".
Anyways, just wanted to let you know.

Re: 3 point spline artefacts
thanks, it sounds like you caught a bug.
I couldn't reproduce it though.
Please can you post a screenshot of your tool panel so I will try with the same settings ?

Re: 3 point spline artefacts
It does not always appear. Most of the time it appears if you make a very "flat" curve. Try to recreate the same curves as I did.
Edit: I can confirm this on OSX and on Windows 7.

Using Mac OSX Maverick with TVPaint Pro 10.5.7 64 bit : can't reproduce the bug, even with the same brush as you =/
Re: 3 point spline artefacts
hm, really
I tried this at home and at work (different computers, OSs and wacom tablets)
The strange thing is that the artifact are definitely pixels because I can erase them but one time after they appeared I used the selection tool and the disappeared again
Edit:
See, I did this spline: and then drew one on top of it and the artifacts disappeared
Well, anyways, if nobody has this issue it is not worth the trouble but it is really a strange and spooky phenomenon.

Have you updated your Wacom drivers ?
Re: 3 point spline artefacts
Hi there,
I can reproduce the behaviour. But only when drawing the spline with my Cintiq or with my Intuos 3. It does not appear, when I use the mouse to draw the spline.
System: Win 7, 64 bit, TVPaint Pro 10.5.7, Wacom Driver 6.3.5w3

Re: 3 point spline artefacts
I tried hard to emulate your bug with my Intuos 4 (I changed all sorts of settings, emulated your edit curve, used other tools besides air brush etc.)

Re: 3 point spline artefacts
I experimented a bit with my Wacom Intuous 4 and got some pretty nasty artifacting... definitely a bug.
I setup a snapto-grid first.
Then, for each line I establish pt one and pt two, then move the arc vigorously around the screen before placing pt three. Sometimes I notice a very faint, second fixed line between pt one and pt two, while moving the arc around... before placing pt three. When pt three is placed, the multiple artifact arcs appear (radiating most strongly from pt one) along with the final 3pt arc.

update: I installedWacom Intuous 4 driver 6.3.8-4 to replace old driver 6.3.6-3. The resulting artifacts are somewhat different and much less exaggerated, but still present.

I am using an Intuos4 with the latest drivers (6.3.8-2)Elodie wrote:![]()

I will try to use the mouse later.
Edit: Haven't tried it with the mouse (I don't have spare batteries at the moment

As the size pen pressure has no effect on the 3 point spline anyway, the easy solution would just be to turn it off, (set the connection button to none). At least it works for me.

I can not reproduce it on my Linux, but we will run deeper tests monday.

Re: 3 point spline artefacts
Definitely a bug, but why can't I reproduce the bug ?
I tried with an Intuos 3 and 5, with different kind of tools (airbrush, pen), pressure was always enable with the 3 points spline... That's crazy, where is the difference between Svengali's, Furushil's or Animark's versions (where the bug happens) and Fabrice's, Paul's or my version (where the bug can't be done)

Svengali, Furushil and Animark : what is your processor ?
Fabrice and I are using Intel processors.

Is the bug happening on both computers ?
